Meet Mark Webster - Front of House
Mark joined the Chester Residence team in July 2011 and originally supported the Housekeeping team, before working as a Night Porter until February 2013, when he started in his current Front of House role.
“Working daytime shifts is fantastic for me”, says Mark. “I enjoy having a lot more contact with our guests and with the team here.
“Each day is quite varied, because you simply never know what guests are going to ask for and how we can help them. It starts with making sure rooms are perfect and ready for check-in, but each of our guests is in Edinburgh for a different reason and it’s great if we can do something to make their time here more enjoyable. “
Mark got his start in the hospitality industry working as a Linen Porter at two five star Edinburgh hotels whilst studying history at Edinburgh University. He soon decided that academic life wasn’t for him and left university. A brief stint with the armed forces followed, but due to an injury Mark had to return to civilian life in 2011.
He says: “I’m very lucky to have joined the Chester team. It’s great to work not just with lovely colleagues, but also in a place that has such high standards when it comes to service.”
The love for hospitality runs in the family with both Mark’s sister and his wife Samantha working for Edinburgh luxury hotels.
When not at work, Mark tries to do – in his own words – ‘as little as possible’. This hasn’t stopped him, however, to follow his love for video games: “Yes, I was one of the people who went from shop to shop to secure a copy of Grand Theft Auto V. I’d convinced myself to wait until the crowds subsided, but by lunchtime I succumbed and spent the next hour scouring Edinburgh for a copy.”
Last, but not least, does he have any New Year’s resolutions? Oh yes. Mark plans to join a gym and get a little fitter. Feel free to ask him about his progress when you next stay with us!
